Situated at the western edge of Loch Earn and at the foot of Glen Ogle, it was the coming of the railway that brought Lochearnhead within reach. The railway has long since gone but because of its idyllic and picturesque location the village has since become a centre of leisure pursuits, including water skiing, sailing and scuba diving.
This area of Scotland seems to enjoy a particularly mild climate; the only record of Loch Earn freezing over was in the winter of 1894/5 when a grand bonspiel (curling match) was held!
The peace and tranquility of this area belies its turbulent past. Just east of the village on the loch shores you will see Edinample Castle, built by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy in 1630. A little farther east will bring you to Ardvorlich House (associated with Sir Walter Scott's "The Legend of Montrose") and the home of the Stewarts of Ardvorlich since 1580.
Near the entrance to Ardvorlich House you will see a tombstone marking the spot where workmen unearthed the graves of seven Glen Coe men, killed whilst attempting a raid on the house in 1620.
